Plan Your Weekend Trip to Canyon Lake, Texas
The Short Version
We’ve hosted thousands of guests here, and almost every one of them asks us the same question: “What should we actually do while we’re here?” So we finally wrote it down. This is the weekend we text to our own friends when they visit Canyon Lake for the first time.
Friday: You Made It
Check-in opens at 4:00 PM, and the best Friday plan is the simplest one. Grab groceries and firewood before you fully unpack; Brookshire Brothers, 8 minutes from the property, covers both in one stop. Get dinner going, and let the drive wear off outside.
Fire pits are included at no charge and spread across the property, along with the pool, hammocks, and yard games (cornhole, darts, ping pong). When it gets dark, look up. We’re far enough out that the stars actually show up, and a fire pit under a big Hill Country sky is the fastest way to feel like the weekend has started.
Quiet hours run 10 PM to 7 AM on a standard stay, and there are no quiet hours on a full 14-cabin buyout, so pace the first night accordingly.
Keep Friday simple: unpack, eat, fire, stars. Saturday is the busy day.
Saturday: Lake Day, Then Gruene

Canyon Lake Marina

- Best for: families, pontoon rentals, jet skis, first-time visitors
- Time needed: 2 to 4 hours
- Pro tip: on summer weekends, reserve your boat a week or two ahead. The marina fills up fast once the lake gets hot.
Why we love it: Canyon Lake Marina puts you on the water minutes after you leave your porch, and Canyon Lake’s famously clear water does the rest.
If the marina is booked out, Cranes Mill Marina and independent operators like Texas Hill Country Watercraft Rentals and ME TIME Boat & Jet-Ski Rentals round out the options, including captained boats if nobody in your group wants to drive.
No boat? Overlook Park at the Canyon Lake dam is a free day-use stop with one of the best views of the lake, about 20 to 25 minutes around the south shore. Bring your camera; it’s a quick stop, not an all-day one.
Gruene Hall + The Gristmill (evening)

- Best for: live music, two-steppers, out-of-town guests you want to impress
- Time needed: the whole evening
- Pro tip: eat first at the Gristmill, the river-view restaurant built into the ruins of an 1878 cotton gin next door, then walk over for the music.
Why we love it: Gruene Hall, built in 1878, is Texas’ oldest continually operating dance hall, and it runs live music every day of the week. Many daytime and weeknight sets are free, while evening shows, especially Friday and Saturday nights, typically carry a cover. Check the calendar before you commit to a night; shows and start times change week to week.
Sunday: Float, Backbone, or Both
If it’s floating season, roughly March or April through September or October, make Sunday morning a float. The Guadalupe is about 20 minutes away, and going early beats the crowds and the afternoon heat, then gets you back in time to pack out by the 11:00 AM check-out. Outside floating season, or if your group would rather drive than float, take the Devils Backbone: a scenic stretch of Ranch Road 32 between Wimberley and Blanco, 60 to 90 minutes round trip depending on how often you stop for photos. Route it past Dry Comal Creek Vineyards, a staff favorite about 20 minutes from the property, for a tasting. Just know it’s closed Tuesday and Wednesday. More stops are in our wineries guide.
If the morning runs long, don’t cut it short. Late check-out is free until noon most days, or $75 to stay until 3:00 PM. Ask us the night before and we’ll tell you what’s open.
Make It Yours: Four Ways to Run This Weekend
The Friday-to-Sunday plan above is the template. Here’s how we’d adjust it depending on who’s in the cars.
Canyon Lake with Kids
Keep the marina morning, then trade the Gruene night for pizza at the cabin, the pool until dinner, and a s’mores-and-yard-games evening. If you have restless kids and a free afternoon, Natural Bridge Caverns is about 35 minutes away and runs tours year round. A Couples Getaway
Slow everything down. Late breakfast, a winery afternoon on the Devils Backbone loop, dinner at the Gristmill, and the dance floor at Gruene Hall. If it’s just the two of you, the Hot Tub Cabin is the one to book: one bedroom, a private hot tub, and built for exactly this weekend.
Girls' Weekend or Bachelorette
Float Saturday, winery Sunday, fire pit both nights. The cabins sit close together, so the group stays together instead of scattering down a hotel hallway. Plan a group stay and we’ll take it from there.
A Concert Weekend
If there’s one thing we tell guests to check before they lock their dates, it’s the Whitewater Amphitheater calendar. Big-name acts play that outdoor stage all summer, about 20 minutes from us, which means you’re back at your own fire pit after the encore instead of driving back to San Antonio. Check their calendar first, then book the cabin.
Canyon Lake by Season
This itinerary holds year round; the only thing that changes is Sunday morning.
Spring
Wildflowers along the FM roads, mild patio weather, the float season warming up, and lighter crowds than summer.
Summer
Prime float and lake season, the pool earning its keep, and the busiest weekends between Memorial Day and Labor Day. Book boats and cabins ahead.
Fall
Cooler air, wine-tasting weather, and fire pit nights that start earlier. The lake crowds thin out; the Hill Country doesn’t.
Winter
Floating and the pool close down, but Gruene’s music calendar runs year round, the fire pits stay lit, and the Hot Tub Cabin’s private hot tub was made for cold clear nights under the stars.
Whichever version you run, the weekend starts and ends in the same place: a cabin with your people around it.
Your Home Base for the Weekend
This whole itinerary starts and ends at the same place: your cabin. Full kitchen, your own porch, and a pool and fire pits everyone in the group can actually use together, not just sleep near. About 70 minutes from Austin on I-35 South and about an hour from San Antonio (roughly 43 miles via US-281 N). Either way, standard check-in is 4:00 PM, so plan to leave in time to make it before dark on Friday.
Do I need to book activities in advance for a Canyon Lake weekend?
Boat and jet ski rentals at the marina are worth booking ahead on summer weekends, they fill up fast once the lake gets busy. Gruene Hall seating is first come, first served with no table reservations, and headliner shows are ticketed, so check the calendar before you commit to a night. Dry Comal Creek Vineyards is closed Tuesday and Wednesday, so build your Sunday wine stop around that.
