Stargazing Cabins in the Texas Hill Country
Starlight Horizon is a 14-cabin resort on 5 acres near Canyon Lake, seven minutes from Canyon Lake Marina, and it was built for looking up. The name is not a coincidence. We keep the property’s outdoor lighting minimal on purpose, so on a clear night the sky over your porch fills in with more stars than most people see in a year.
You don’t have to drive anywhere or set an alarm for it. Every cabin has a front and back porch, six fire pits are scattered across the property, and the natural end of a night here is a chair, a fire, and the sky.

Why is the sky so dark here?
Two reasons, and one of them is on purpose.
Clear of the city glow
Canyon Lake’s north shore sits well clear of the light San Antonio and Austin throw into the sky. Out here the horizon stays dark in every direction that matters.
Dark on purpose
We keep outdoor lighting minimal specifically to protect the night sky. Pathways run darker after dark than a typical hotel, so bring a flashlight for the walk back. That is the tradeoff for a sky this good.

Winter nights
The Geminids, the strongest meteor shower of the year, peak December 13-14, 2026. The crescent moon sets by mid-evening and leaves the rest of the night dark.
When should you plan a stargazing trip?
Any clear night at Starlight Horizon shows more stars than most people see in a year. For the sky at its best, aim for a new moon, and put two dates on your calendar: August 12-13 for the Perseids and December 13-14 for the Geminids.

We don’t supply telescopes or binoculars, so bring your own if you want a closer look. Naked-eye viewing under these skies is plenty to pick out the Milky Way and catch meteors during a shower.

Where do you actually watch from?
Your own porch, mostly. All 14 cabins have front and back porch seating, so the show starts wherever you left your chair.
The six fire pits scattered across the property turn stargazing into the end of a good night rather than an activity you plan. And one cabin takes it further: the Hot Tub Cabin has the only private hot tub on the property, tucked into its own backyard, and a soak after dark under Hill Country stars is exactly what it’s built for. For a bigger group, any combination of the 13 three-bedroom cabins works. Each sleeps 8 with a full kitchen and two porches, and a full 14-cabin buyout puts the whole property, pool, fire pits, and all, under one booking.

Much to our delight there is a small colony of cats that live there. Liz the manager and Edith were all too happy to chat with us about them and seemed to really have a love for the property and the people. The grounds are well maintained and really live up to then name of starlight. We enjoyed playing darts and playing the giant jenga game. The pool was warm and relaxing and we swam every night…”

“We had a really great experience at Starlight Horizon. When you first enter the property, the cabins are neatly arranged and clearly marked, making it easy to find where your cabin is located. There is also dedicated parking at each cabin, which makes loading and unloading your bags very convenient. The cabins themselves are clean and modern, which put my germaphobe wife quickly at ease. Each cabin has a front and back porch, giving you many options for sitting around and enjoying the views from both sides of the property. There is a very nice pool and a firepit area that has incredible views of the Hill Country. There is also an on site food truck, JennEddie’s, which was not only delicious but extremely convenient. We never went hungry while we were there. We will likely be back for a quick getaway or would be perfect our next family reunion.”

It’s on purpose, not an oversight. Starlight Horizon intentionally keeps outdoor lighting minimal to preserve the stargazing experience, so pathways are darker after dark than a typical hotel. Bring or use a flashlight walking the property at night, and treat the darkness as the point, not an inconvenience.

What if it’s cloudy the night we’re there?
Fire pits, the pool, and the rest of the property still deliver even on an overcast night. Hill Country weather turns over fast too, so a clear window often opens up later that same night, or the next one if you’re staying more than one.
