Canyon Lake Marina & Boating
Canyon Lake has two marinas: Canyon Lake Marina on the north shore and Cranes Mill Marina on the south. Canyon Lake Marina is the closer one to Starlight Horizon, about 7 minutes from the property, and it rents everything from pontoons to jet skis. Between the two marinas you can book tritoons, double-decker party pontoons, center-console fishing boats, jet skis, paddleboards, and kayaks. A few smaller operators run rentals on the lake too, including Texas Hill Country Watercraft Rentals, which rents Yamaha VX Cruiser jet skis by the hour or the day, and ME TIME Boat & Jet-Ski Rentals, which offers captain-operated pontoon trips if nobody in your group wants to drive.
If your group is big enough to want more than one boat, book early on summer weekends, the marina fills up fast once the lake gets busy.

Camping, Fishing & Swimming at Canyon Lake
The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers runs seven public parks around the lake, and two of them have camping: Cranes Mill Park on the south shore (RV and tent sites, a fishing pier, and a boat ramp) and Potters Creek Park (RV and tent sites, screen shelters, a swim beach, and two boat ramps). North Park, formerly a primitive tent-camping area, switched to day-use only in May 2026; it stays open daily for picnicking, hiking, and shoreline access. Potters Creek is the pick if your group wants to swim off a real beach instead of a boat.
Fishing is a bigger deal here than the name “Canyon Lake” suggests: it’s known statewide for trophy striped bass, with fish over 30 pounds landed regularly and the lake record well over 40. Local guide services run trips out of the marina if you want a shot at one without your own boat. Texas Parks & Wildlife maintains public fishing access points around the lake for shore fishing too.
Whichever park you pick, it works as a real day trip too, close enough to swing by for an afternoon on the water and still be back for dinner, no overnight stay required.
Gruene Hall & Whitewater Amphitheater
Gruene (pronounced “green”) is about 25 minutes from Starlight Horizon, and it’s worth the drive on its own. Gruene Hall, built in 1878, is Texas’ oldest continually operating dance hall, a 6,000-square-foot tin-roofed building with the original layout still intact, added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1975. George Strait played there regularly in the 1970s and ’80s, and the stage has since hosted Willie Nelson, Garth Brooks, Lyle Lovett, and Merle Haggard. Check the calendar before you go, cover charges and start times vary by show.
If you want a bigger stage, Whitewater Amphitheater is a 5,600-capacity outdoor venue on the Guadalupe River, under the same cypress trees the tubers float past, and it sits on FM 306, the same road as Starlight Horizon. It’s hosted national touring acts since 2007 and picked up Academy of Country Music venue nominations along the way. Pair a Gruene afternoon (shops, the Gristmill, the historic district) with a Whitewater show at night and you’ve got a full day without moving your car more than once.
The Devils Backbone Scenic Drive
If you’ve got a couple of free hours and don’t mind a curvy road, drive the Devils Backbone. It’s the local name for a stretch of Ranch Road 32 that runs along a ridge of the Balcones Fault between Wimberley and Blanco, and it’s one of the most photographed drives in the Hill Country. Rolling hills, oak and cedar breaks, and wide pullouts for photos, the loop typically takes 60 to 90 minutes depending on how often you stop. It’s popular with motorcycle riders on weekends, so expect some traffic if you’re driving it on a Saturday afternoon.
The road is also lined with local legend. Ghost stories about Spanish monks, Confederate soldiers, and Native American apparitions have followed this stretch for generations, which is part of why locals call it “the most haunted road in Texas.” Take it seriously or don’t; either way, the views are the real draw.
The Devils Backbone runs right past the Hill Country wineries cluster (see the Wineries card above), so it’s an easy add-on to a winery afternoon rather than a separate trip. Either way, it’s a genuinely good way to spend a free afternoon.
